How Should I Dress Tomorrow?

People are always writing us to ask “what should I wear tomorrow?” We love the question because we have the answers that are practical AND stylish. We understand the stress that comes when you peer into you closet and draw a blank about what to wear tomorrow. So we are going to break it down into a few easy to manage steps.

1. Check the weather, specifically the lows temperature so you know how many layers to wear. Don’t get caught without everything you need to keep dry and comfortable.

2. Answer the question “Where are you going?” Are you wondering what to wear to run around doing errands, to work and then out for cocktails and dinner, or are you attending and charity event or a luncheon? Each will require its own appropriate attire. See our suggestions below.

3. Look in your closet to find just the right ensemble for each event.

Our Approach
Many people think of dressing seasonally, but we take a slightly different approach and put our wardrobe choices together on a monthly basis. You will dress quite differently in December and February, even though they are both winter months. It the same applies to June and August and the other seasons as well.

Plan Ahead
Schedule some time to spend putting a few outfits together for casual, work and evening. We like to say “have a party your closet” – turn up the tunes and enjoy the process. Try on everything, add shoes, jewelry, and accessories and then strut your stuff in front of a full-length mirror. Look at yourself from all angles and assess your choices. If something is not working, repeat the process until you are satisfied that you have at least two “go – to” looks in each category of what to wear to work, casual and evenings. This is also the time to check for loose buttons and hems and to make sure that everything is clean and pressed. Nothing ruins a look more that a missing button or a hanging hem.

1. What to Wear Casual Daytime
For what to wear on casual days, we like to develop an everyday look that is easy to put together. Start with a great fitting pants or jeans, then add a crisp shirt and a cardigan if the weather calls for one. Your shoes or boots should be comfortable flats or wedges. Add a scarf for interest, a chic bag to carry all your daily needs – wallet, makeup, cell phone, water bottle, etc. Simple hoop earrings and a sport watch complete this chic way everyday way of dressing.

2. What to Wear to Work in a Corporate Office.
If you are wondering what to wear to work tomorrow, and your office is corporate or conservative, start with a great fitting sheath dress, and then add a jacket or cardigan sweater. Wear tights or stockings (in most workplaces, the bare legged look is frowned upon), and a pair of pumps or kitten heels. Make sure your shoes are polished and well heeled. People do look at them and shoes that are in need of repair can mar an otherwise brilliant look. For jewelry, keep it on the simple side – nothing that jingles.

3. What to Wear to work in a Creative Field.
For what to wear to work, when your job is in a creative field, you have a much wider choice of styles. Here is a great look to put together. Start with a fitted pair of black slacks that are end just above the ankle. Add a silk blouse with a longer cut and wear it with the hem out. A pair of gorgeous pump is an absolute must. Then have fun with your accessories by adding some statement earrings, a large cuff, or layering on several necklaces. You may add a jacket, cardigan or wrap to complete this ever so stylish look.

4. What to Wear to A Charity Luncheon
Have a charity event to attend tomorrow? We love when our friends write to ask, “What should I wear tomorrow to a Charity Luncheon?” Charity lunches are such a fun way to get together “with the girls” while donating to important organizations that accomplish so much good for so many. Contrary to a popular opinion that women dress for men, we know that most women dress for other women. How many times does “What are you wearing?” come up in conversation with friends. The Charity Luncheon is a perfect venue for what we call “Lady Dressing.” Think Jackie O, Grace Kelly and the other fabulous fashion icons. We like to suggest a day dress, and our favorite style is a sheath. It is universally flattering for most body types. Pick a pair of pumps, with or without a platform, to coordinate, with as high of a heel as you like. Your purse is an important part of your ensemble. Choose one with a shoulder chain or a top handle. This is the time to show off your best pieces. Choose your jewelry to complete this daytime look – earrings, necklace, bracelet – this is the time to break out the good stuff.

5. What to Wear to a Charity Event in the Evening.
When the invitation states Cocktails or Cocktails and Dinner, a perfect choice is the Little Black Dress or LBD. This is the time to dress up and have a ball. Wear it with the highest heels you can stand. Add a dressy clutch bag, and some statement jewelry. We are big fans of wearing chandelier earrings and a cuff and forgoing the necklace but that is your choice. Gold, pearls stones, these are all perfect to compliment the evening ensemble. In colder climates, a fur or faux fur jackets is all you need to add for an evening out on the town in style.
