GUEST DIARY• BY: KAREN KLOPP AND HILARY DICK
Hope for Depression’s The Value of Talk Therapy is the most timely invitation that we have received in recent days. Depression affects millions of citizens each year regardless of age, gender, race, religion, or economic level. And of course, Covid-19 has wreaked additional emotional havoc on all of us causing spikes in depression, anxiety, feelings of isolation and hopelessness. No one is more aware of the pain and pitfalls of depression than Audrey Gruss, whose mother Hope suffered greatly from this debilitating disease.
Audrey explained, “The most recent research has shown that over 100 million Americans are struggling with depression and anxiety during the pandemic. The time is more important than ever to learn as much as possible about the symptoms of this global health issue and find out how to get help! Our 14th Annual Hope Luncheon Seminar is focusing on the importance and value of Talk Therapy.”
Audrey founded Hope for Depression Research Foundation in 2006, to fund cutting-edge science into research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of depression and its related mood and other emotional disorders — bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress syndrome, anxiety disorder and suicide.
Another critical mission of the organization is to educate the public and reduce the stigma that still surrounds diseases of the mind and brain. HDRF was off and running with the concept as the Walk for Hope became a rallying event and a successful way to draw attention to the cause. It has become an annual, anticipated event in both Southampton and Palm Beach.
And when Covid hit last summer, the race in Southampton went virtual with the indomitable Jamee Gregory as the Grand Marshall.
Photos were fed in from far and near, with over 800 participants from all over the world.
With Audrey’s distinguished background in the field of beauty, creating the fragrance of HOPE was a logical and luxurious step in the battle. “With each purchase of Hope Fragrance, you are giving back and bringing us closer to finding answers to one of the most critical health issues of our time. Wear it to be beautiful, strong, and to celebrate the hope in all of us.”
This past summer Debbie Bancroft celebrated the launch of another scent in the line, Hope Night, at a safely distanced gathering.
If there is a color for the emotion of hope, the bright shade of the HDRF is perfection. The hue evokes optimism and a sense of purpose.
“The color yellow is one of the most naturally positive colors because it reminds us of sunny, happy days! It is the color of Hope and symbolizes everything positive about the uplifting work we do at the Hope for Depression Research Foundation,” exclaims Audrey.
Hilary has chosen a fantastic ensemble for the Virtual Event:
“The color yellow is a perfect symbol for the foundation as it exudes warmth and hope. Instead of typically wearing a dress to this event, I thought since virtual, it might be more fun to wear a pretty blouse and pants. I found this rich yellow blouse and think it would be just right. It feels autumnal as well as sunny and could be worn year round. And even though we are staying at home, it is always a good idea to have the complimenting accessories that pull the look together. Floral earrings, a satin bag and killer heels … just because … makes attending the Hope Luncheon from afar, and participating in this important cause, feel even more special.”
As I shopped this luminous shade, I came to appreciate its versatility and neutrality. It is a happy pop of color to liven your outfits whether dinner in the city or en plein air in the southern climes. It would be a perfect addition to your Thanksgiving Weekend.
Crisp for Fall …
Weekend in the Country …
I found this trio of light and bright at Ralph Lauren that are very well priced. RL is one of the brands that you can trust for quality in their auxiliary line.
Thanksgiving in Palm Beach …
And another trio with feminine flourish at Net-a-Porter — good news — same day delivery.
In 2010, four years after its founding, HDFR created the Depression Task Force, an innovative concept bringing together the brightest minds in Mental Health Science to collaborate on the science. You can watch the video to find out more about the fantastic strides they are making in the field and hear directly from Audrey about its importance.
“When You See Something, Say Something” is an adage that has become part of our modern day lexicon. It applies to friends and relatives as well. If you need help finding an organization for yourself or others, HDRF can assist you.
In this month of “Gratitude,” we are thankful for organizations such as Hope for Depression Research Foundation and its steadfast supporters who are leading the charge to find new and innovative treatments. Please join them in their quest.
