Coming up on our favorite 10 days of sports spectating, The Championships Wimbledon 2014, Monday, June 23rd marks the opening of the tournament at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The club began hosting this historical event in 1877. When women first began to play tennis in the 1860s, heavy materials such as flannel and even wearing a bustle was deemed appropriate. It was Maud Watson, who won the first Wimbledon Ladies’ Championship in 1884, who popularized the white tennis apparel trend. She favored whites simply because they reflected sunlight and masked perspiration, but to this day Wimbledon still requests that players hold to the tradition of competing in white. And how can one not admire the simplicity of the crisp linens against the bright green court. For what to wear for spectating court-side at Wimbledon we shopped Ralph Lauren a long supporter of the event. For us, this classic summer dress is a ready-to-wear and can easily transition from day to night by a simple switch of accessories. For those brisk English evenings, one cannot go wrong with a linen jacket with its sophisticated black accents. Or for an edgier contemporary look the white leather jacket is well equipped for a night out in London town.
