The Kips Bay President’s Dinner is a high powered event created by the preeminent design community to celebrate its own within their revered ranks. This is the kick-off to the spring season in the design and social world as swans and peacocks emerge on April 1st at New York’s Cipriani 42nd Street. This year the excitement continues as celebrated designer Bunny Williams chairs and host Kips Bay Board President James Druckman recognize the extraordinary career of Peter Marino.
In 2007 Marino won an AIA Institute Honor Award for his semi-transparent Louis Vuitton boutique in Hong Kong, and has received much attention for his Chanel Tower in the Ginza district of Tokyo, where he introduced a new form of LED embedded glass. “One of the secrets behind the man in black is his rare approach of treating design as an all-inclusive, one-stop shop: inside, outside, and everything in between gets the full Marino treatment.”
The evening celebrates the rites of springtime and the upcoming Kips Bay Show House taking place in a sensational location at 36-38 East 74 Street from May 2 to May 30. You may recall our article last spring. The Opening Night Party Cocktail Party taking place on May 1st will be a whirl of design darlings and devotees. DPC stopped by earlier this week and unpacked the fascinating history of the house.
What to wear? Long or short? This is a familiar query that Hilary and I receive when advising on What2WearWhere. Not all Black Tie parties are created equal. For some long gowns are de rigueur, for others many women opt for short. If we don’t know, we find the answer in the archives at New York Social Diary or we ask the Chairmen of the event. For the most part, as long as you look festive, really anything goes these days, especially for this creative group.
With bad boy Peter Marino receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, this year’s fete will take on an even more fun and festive spirit. His signature style of leather, buckels, studs and snaps, create a seemingly dangerous edge to his brilliant designs. And it begs the question, “Why do good girls love over bad boys?”
In homage to the high priest of design, our what to wear has taken on a fabulous bit of fun.
Since April is very much a transitional month, I like dark florals rather than the pastel brights we will see in May and June. This one is so ruffled and feminine. As my friends know, I am always looking for dresses with sleeves, and the neckline on this one is also fabulously flattering.
And can you imagine the fun when you top it with this totally edgy Moto Vest?!
And white we are on the subject of Moto, I like mine a bit modified with fewer bells and buckles. This Michael Kors Jacket is a good example of an understated Moto look. The brass hardware gives it a softer look. And the price is not to be believed!
I have been obsessing over the new Bottega Veneta’s bag, The Pouch, since I spied it on Keep It Chic, Preston Davis’s blog. It is sold out in many places so I went deep web diving for it. Aside from white, it come in these three shades of buttery leather. It is a great investment piece for spring and beyond.
To accessorize, I added to the feminine-with-an-edge look, and Ocscar de la Renta’s Statement Earrings never disappoint.
To complement the silver zippers, I chose Via Spiga sandals for their architectural look.
And I also adore these classic Jimmy Choo Sandals with the mirrored finish.
Hilary, as usual, made a brilliant fashion choice. I immediately saw leather when I saw this invitation. In homage to Peter Marino, I thought it only fitting.
And as luck would have it I found the perfect dress. Made of butter-soft vegan leather it is manages to be both dressy and feminine.
To keep the neckline clean, I chose a pair of simple statement earrings in silver. I just love the heart shapes.
For my bag, nothing is more classic than a Bottega Veneta clutch. And the woven sides and silver clasp add texture to the look.
And because the leather dress speaks for itself, I like a simple black sandal to compliment and elongate. Plus Stuart Weitzman shoes are always easy and well priced.
