It is that time of year to get into the trenches — trench coats that is. Originally designed for soldiers of World War I to replace the heavy serge coats that were weighty when wet; bogging down the brave, young soldiers down in the trenches. The trench had all sorts of functional design features — D rings could hold weapons, a flap pocket to keep pistols safe, wrist buckles and an adjustable belt to hold in the heat and keep out the rain. In some cases epaulets were added, an historical symbol of military valor. Traditionally, khaki functioned as camouflage to blend into the battlefields.
As this is the season for unpredictable weather, it is time to take a good look at your trench coat to see if it passes muster for the busy spring ahead. It is an essential piece that goes from morning to night; and over your arm when traveling. We combed our affiliates to bring you a few of the best and the brightest for spring. Love this duo from Tory Burch, on SALE and in stock.
After the war, the ladies adopted the crisp design style. And why not? With the oversized shoulders, tightly belted waist and flared skirt, the coat presents a shapely silhouette for every body type.

Hilary brings us her personal bests. “J.Crew has always been a go to for us for classic styles. And every season they have some version of the trench. This year’s offering has different fabrics, sheens and even trendy leopard. They also have a cropped trench, for a different take, if you are not ready to commit to the full length.”
