It is that time of year to get into the trenches — trench coats that is. Originally designed for soldiers of World War I to replace the heavy serge coats that were weighty when wet; bogging down the brave, young soldiers down in the trenches.  The trench had all sorts of functional design features — D rings could hold weapons, a flap pocket to keep pistols safe, wrist buckles and an adjustable belt to hold in the heat and keep out the rain.  In some cases epaulets were added, an historical symbol of military valor. Traditionally, khaki functioned as camouflage to blend into the battlefields.
