Semiquincentennial or sestercentennial — call it what you like — we’re striking up the band to celebrate 250 years of American independence! Tonight, February 20, The Society of the Four Arts kicks off the festivities with a spirited “Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary” Dinner Dance. It is a joyful tribute to the freedoms that empower us to pursue our passions and dreams — and a perfect excuse to dress for the stars and stripes in their most sophisticated forms.

It is a fitting theme for Palm Beach’s oldest cultural institution, which has served as a cornerstone of the community’s artistic life for nearly nine decades. Established by Maud Howe Elliott, Mrs. Lorenzo E. Woodhouse, and Mrs. Frederick Johnson, the Society was founded to bring world-class culture to the resort. The name itself represents a commitment to the “Four Arts”: Art, Music, Drama, and Literature — a multidisciplinary legacy that provides the perfect backdrop for a historic celebration.


The elegant Chairman Jeannie Rutherford and Co-Chairman Cindy Bardes Galvin are honored to bring America’s 250th Anniversary to life for The Society of the Four Arts 2026 Dinner Dance. To commemorate this pivotal milestone in our nation’s history, they have looked to the Marquis de Lafayette’s timeless words: “Humanity has won its battle. Liberty now has a country.”




We set out to find an ensemble that reflects our patriotic spirit, perfectly suited for moments that call for refined, unmistakable elegance. Rather than leaning literal with the stars and stripes, we’re letting the palette do the talking. Deep navy is always fitting for a night out in Palm Beach, and a bold red is timeless and captivating. A touch of gold brings in just enough sparkle for the grand celebration. Long, graceful silhouettes feel most appropriate here — a strapless, a softly draped metallic, or an easy long-sleeve sets the tone for the evening. For Lady Liberty!

In keeping with the spirit of the year, acclaimed historian and biographer Walter Isaacson has penned The Greatest Sentence Ever Written — a small book with an oversized message, currently available on Audible.
Inspired by this legacy of liberty and light, Hilary has chosen her own shining style for the evening.
This is such a special Palm Beach event… especially this year, honoring our great country’s monumental birthday. I see the room filled with beautiful ladies in red, white and blue, and of course a little silver and gold. Festive and feminine. The Four Arts is a crucial part of Palm Beach life for all of us who grew up there. My parents will be in attendance with many of their friends in support of the institution… and will be seen swirling on the dance floor in their patriotic best.

For America’s 250th, only monumental will do. The anniversary will be celebrated nationwide as America250 provides hands-on programs and challenges throughout the country. All eyes will be on the National Mall on July 4, 2026, with major performances and fireworks destined to light up the capital in unforgettable fashion.

At the heart of it all is Freedom 250, the White House-led effort designed to honor the nation’s 250th anniversary with thoughtful national celebrations and tributes.

What became of the 56 signers? Five were captured by the British as traitors and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary Army, and another had two sons captured. Ultimately, nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or the hardships of the Revolutionary War.
Today, a monument to the 56 Signers stands on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Each stone represents one of the founders, etched with a facsimile of the signature they so bravely penned.
