MARCH 24, 2021
GUEST DIARY• BY: KAREN KLOPP AND HILARY DICK
Looking for a high-goal getaway? Full gallop to the Lexus International Gay Polo Tournament presented by Douglas Elliman Real Estate for a weekend of non-stop fun & feteing. The event kicks off at the Pavilion at the International Polo Club in Wellington, Florida on Friday night, March 27th, with a Covid-clever Polotini MASK-querade. And don’t worry, the organizers are taking special care to follow safety protocols for guests attending the three-day affair.
Gay Polo League is dedicated to producing high-end polo experiences and changing perceptions — one chukker at a time. There is special excitement this year as the dashing players on four teams compete on Field #1 at International Polo Club where they will valiantly vie for the two prestigious trophies, Senator’s Cup and Founder’s Cup.
Chip McKenney, the founder of GPL, enthusiastically describes the unique experience:
“Whenever I am asked about the International Gay Polo Tournament, I describe it as the love-child between Burning Man and Pretty Woman. The Gay Polo League event is equally exciting for players and spectators – there are great polo matches and a knock-out tailgate competition.
“GPL celebrates the best of LGBTQ+ culture … color, energy, friendship, travel, and fun.
“What to wear … ? The GPL is the perfect occasion to dress in costume or come casually elegantly attired. Rest assured, you will be most welcome.”
Following Chip’s advice on the “casually elegant” attire, NET A PORTER provided sensational separates to create a weekend worthy wardrobe for spectating and celebrating.
The kick-off is Friday Night’s MASK-querade — a sensational soiree with dinner, open bar and a multimedia tribute performance by Randy Roberts. The lively event is also a benefit for SAGE USA. Now that’s a great party! These elegant white jumpsuits tickled my fancy and I decided to go with the all white theme that looks so elegant in the evening.
MASK-Querade Madness
The celebration continues on Saturday as the gates open at 11:00 a.m. for either Tailgating or Lunch in the VIP Tent. I prefer the former as you can stroll the sidelines, taking in keen fashion and frivolity on parade. Same bubble friend groups will vie for the title of Best Tailgate.
Sidelines Spectating …
Everything turns rosy or rosé on Sunday with an elegant fieldside brunch and the excitement of a 22-goal match of the USPA Gold Cup Finals.
Rosy or Rosé for Brunch …
Hilary’s choices reflect her fine flair: “This is the perfect event to sport the on trend puff sleeves and smocking dress. Long or short, you can’t go wrong with the feminine look as you cheer on the players. A block heel or wedge is a must as you stroll among the tailgaters. And don’t forget to tuck sunscreen and an extra mask in your bag … let the games begin!”
Bravo to the organizers, participants, advertisers and supporters of the 11th Annual Gay Polo Tournament where old friends and new come together to celebrate the inclusion that the organization encourages and promotes!
