The New York Botanical Garden will be transformed into a fantasy of florals inspired by Van Gogh’s Flowers this month. In broad strokes, NYBG immerses attentive attendees in a fantastic floriculture of overscaled botanical displays and artwork based on the artist’s fascination with nature. What a glorious way to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of The Conservatory Ball.
We asked Maureen Chilton, Chair Emerita of the Board of Trustees to elaborate on this landmark occasion. “To mark five decades of the Conservatory Ball, we are not just celebrating a momentous anniversary, but a testament of the power and beauty of the New York Botanical Garden. This 50th year is a magnificent milestone, reflecting half a century of unwavering dedication to plant research and conservation, horticulture, and education, as well as blockbuster exhibitions such as the current Van Gogh Flowers. We are excited to welcome our cherished friends and supporters for an evening that promises to be as vibrant and inspiring as NYBG itself, honoring our past while cultivating a flourishing future.”
The garden’s rich history is intertwined with that of the city. Founded in 1891 by several prominent and prescient citizens of the day, including Nathaniel Lord Britton, a botanist and the first director of the garden. From the start, it was designed as both a respite for New Yorkers to experience nature and a scientific institution for plant-based science and research. An unwavering mission that now continues to attract the best and the brightest minds in the field.
What was once a bastion of the city’s Old Guard gathering to signal the terminus of the social season is now a must-see for so many multigenerational devotees. There is no doubt that it is one of the highlights of the spring social season. The evening unfolds from a fragrant cocktail reception in the garden to an elegant, formally seated dinner. Afterward, the party hits the dance floor in a profusion of blooming belles.
The dance floor pounds with the beat.
For this Starry, Starry Night, I was feeling the blues, and created a stunning collection of gowns to enhance your garden experience. The shimmer of the two cool blues intoxicates while the soft florals are blossoms of spring watercolor beauty. Jewelry is Asha by Ashley McCormick whose new boutique was the darling of the Palm Beach fashion scene this past season. Her mother-of-pearl finishes subtly sparkle and reflect flattering on the skin. For shoes, I have taken advantage of the increasingly popular block heel trend, which allows for graceful footing without sinking stilettos. These two golden clutches are an investment in elegance.

Hilary’s painterly collection is exquisitely crafted. “I went with a subtle nod to the florals that are such an integral part of this beautiful evening. I love the pale pinks and soft blues paired with fun festive heels and jewelry. Perfect for a night out under the skies and in the fabulous buildings of the Botanical Gardens.”

From May 24 through October 26, 2025 visitors to Van Gogh’s Flowers will be immersed in both live and faux implosions of the artist’s beloved sunflowers. NYBG offers a selection of engaging, interactive events surrounding the exhibit.
On certain nights, you can experience Starry Nights viewing of the Van Gogh themed drone show that brings the painting to life before your eyes. This is a first in the city’s cultural institutions and a spectacle not to be missed.
