On Sunday, August 3rd, join friends, neighbors, and families in Southampton for the Race of Hope. Now in its tenth year, this powerful initiative raises crucial awareness and funds for the Hope for Depression Research Foundation. And it’s more than just a race; it’s a collective stride toward a future where depression is better understood, more effectively treated, and ultimately, overcome. HDRF leads the charge in groundbreaking research, actively seeking answers and developing innovative solutions to alleviate suffering from this pervasive illness.

This fast-paced event has become a tradition in the bucolic village of Southampton. The race route is a beautiful run or walk around Lake Agawam starting at 8:30 A.M. Participants come from all over the tri-state area and beyond, including professional and first-time runners, walkers, corporate teams, families, and children to unite as a community and raise awareness in the fight to defeat depression.

HDRF was founded in April 2006 by the indomitable Audrey Gruss in memory of her mother Hope who suffered from clinical depression. “When she passed away in December 2005, I vowed that I would do all in my power to help conquer this dreaded illness. I soon discovered the staggering reality that in the twenty-five years since the introduction of Prozac and the other SSRI antidepressants, there has been virtually no change in the basic treatment of depression, just adjustments in the use of existing approaches.”

Audrey founded Hope for Depression Research Foundation in 2006, to fund cutting-edge science into research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of depression and its related mood and other emotional disorders such as bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress syndrome, anxiety disorder and suicide.

Depression impacts over 18 million Americans annually, transcending age, gender, race, religion, and socioeconomic status. These statistics are truly staggering. Research shows that a growing number of teenage girls experience difficulty.
