We’re here again? It seems like only the blink of an eye since the crowds were at Lincoln Center for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week – but those clothes are barely in the stores. Now we’re baaaack, with all the usual preoccupations of going to the shows. Yikes – How long will they take to start, because they’re never on time? Will I get through the door without being pushed and shoved – unlikely. Will there be hordes of fashionistas desperate to get their photos taken? Will anyone notice my Fairchild Baldwin handbag – and photograph it? I sure hope so. I began at the Park Avenue Armory with the Tommy Hilfiger show. The set was stunning. It was literally a duplicate of Central Park inside the Armory — gravel and red brick paths, huge trees with leaves changing colors, park benches and folding chairs and, as a backdrop, a soaring red brick wall with the signature Hilfiger double stripe running along it. As for the clothes, there were yummy military-style coats; slim pants; luscious hacking jackets in tiny checks; butter soft leathers and flowing silk dresses printed with equestrian prints, all in delicious colors of cranberry, blueberry and hints of caramel. Dress me in Hilfiger, please! En route to Carolina Herrera, a photographer actually snapped my picture holding my tote. Better yet, she asked who designed it! I proudly declared it was a Fairchild Baldwin preview and the collection would be launching soon. Carolina effortlessly showcased stunning long navy coats, flowing splatter print dresses and sharp tailoring. Up next was Rachel Roy’s presentation, which was mobbed by a sea of humanity. Next time I’ll bring a ladder – you needed to be at least 6 feet tall to see the collection! Has anyone experienced the Tokyo subway at rush hour? That’s exactly what J.Crew’s presentation was like – everyone jostling to see and photograph Jenna Lyons’ covetable ski sweaters in greens and reds; checked jackets and slim pants, and a standout shearling coat. The crowd made it clear that J.Crew still rules. Ramp up the glam for Badgley Mischka. Lots of glitter, sequins and furs. The models’ hair was teased to the max like they put their finger in a socket – I hate to think of how much hair spray was used. Good business to be in during fashion week. Oscar de la Renta’s show in his still-under-construction showroom on 42nd Street was a jewel of a collection – literally. Almost every outfit was either embroidered with real jewels, or was in a jewel print. The gowns at the end made the models look like fairytale princesses. And who doesn’t want to be a princess in a fairytale – with a happy ending, of course!
Style on!
