Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year begins on February 19 this year, the Year of the Goat. What to wear to the Firecracker Ceremony and Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade? Red!  In Chinese tradition, red is one of the luckiest colors and it is believed to ward off danger and evil lurking in the New Year.  Chinese New Year is equivalent in importance to our Christmas celebrations.  In addition to dances and firecrackers, families spend time together giving gifts and feasting.  If you want a spectacular and cultural experience, go to the 16^th Annual Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade in Chinatown on Sunday February 22.  It begins on Mott Street and winds its way up and down the streets of Chinatown from 1pm to 3pm.  More than 5000 people are expected to participate!   For more information about the Chinese New Year, go to NYCGO.COM, the Official Guide to NYC.
