After the 4th of July, our favorite summer holiday is Bastille Day, the is the French national holiday which is celebrated on 14 July of each year. In France, it is formally called La Fête Nationale and le Quatorze Juillet. It commemorates the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on 14, seen as a symbol of the uprising of the modern nation. Frenchmen and francophiles around the world commemorate the day. Our favorite is with friends, Michele and Patricia Jean, at their annual fête put on at the historic Stissing House in Pine Plains, NY on Sunday July 13. It is well worth the drive to experience the authentic celebration, under the shade of a canopy of old oaks, complete with a lively Pétanque Tournament, bottomless glasses of Rosé and traditional Provençal fare. The festivities begin at noon and reservations are required. For further information please call 518.398.8800.
