Tomorrow at Old Westbury Gardens avid gardeners and their guests will gather for the second year to celebrate the remarkable legacy of Mary S. Phipps, whose devotion to the beloved landmark and passion for education continue to enrich the community.

Old Westbury Gardens was created more than a century ago as the country home of John “Jay” Phipps and his wife, Margarita “Dita” Grace Phipps. Completed in 1906, the magnificent Westbury House and its gardens remain a remarkably intact glimpse into the gracious life of Long Island’s great estate era.

Upon the passing of Jay and Dita, their daughter Margaret “Peggie” Phipps Boegner did not want the grand estate to disappear as many others of the era were being subdivided and developed. With the support of her family, she established Old Westbury Gardens, which opened to the public in 1959.

Mary had married into the family in 1956, when she wed Howard Phipps Jr., known as “Howdy,” and she began volunteering at the Gardens the moment it opened, devoting more than half a century of her life to it.

Gigi Sheldon, Chairman of the Luncheon, notes her enormous contribution. “Mary spent decades devoting her time and energy to the stewardship of Old Westbury Gardens. She was a beloved and respected figure both locally and throughout the gardening and preservation worlds. She was extremely generous and kind. Everyone who met her adored her. This event celebrates Mary’s love of education and in particular the education of young people.”

For what to wear to this glorious garden gathering, we embraced some of fall’s favorite trends — dark florals, burgundy, leather and a touch of animal print — choosing dresses and separates to mix, match and wear all season long.

Hilary describes her fall looks: “This event calls for florals and autumnal colors. Pieces that complement the bright fall colors and cool air round out the look. A suede boot or neutral block heel grounds the look. Add a classic earring and you’re ready for lunch.”

The luncheon raises funds to welcome thousands of children to the Gardens, where hands-on activities bring history, art, nature and horticulture to life.

Plan your visit to Old Westbury Gardens, where the beauty of the past flourishes alongside a commitment to the future, inspiring new generations through its magnificent house, celebrated gardens, sweeping landscapes and enduring connection to nature.
