After the 4th of July, our favorite summer holiday is Bastille Day, the French national holiday celebrated on the 14th of July each year. In France, it is formally called La Fête Nationale or Le Quatorze Juillet. It commemorates the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, seen as a symbol of the uprising of the modern nation. Frenchmen, women, and francophiles around the world commemorate the day with bien sûr, un peu de Rosé.
Our favorite way to celebrate is with friends, Michele and Patricia Jean, at their annual fête on Sunday, August 12, at the historic Stissing House in Pine Plains, NY. It is well worth the drive to experience the authentic celebration under the shade of a canopy of old oaks, complete with a lively Pétanque Tournament, bottomless glasses of Rosé, and traditional Provençal fare. The festivities begin at 1 p.m. and reservations are required. For further information please call 518.398.8800.
