One of the most exciting moment in the city’s long love affair with the arts and those who create them is the opening of the New Whitney Museum designed by Renzo Piano. I took a hard hat tour last fall and was overwhelmed by the size and scope. As if the greatest curators in the world were given a wish list which all came true. How do you build a 18,000 square foot gallery without a column? With it’s interior lighting, glass walls and public spaces, the designed interaction between the neighborhood, the art and the space takes place 24/7. The new building will vastly increase the Whitney’s exhibition and programming space, offering the most expansive display ever of its unsurpassed collection of modern and contemporary American art.

MAX MARA and Renzo Piano Workshop
Designed by architect Renzo Piano, the new building will include approximately 50,000 square feet of indoor galleries and 13,000 square feet of outdoor exhibition space and terraces facing the High Line. An expansive gallery for special exhibitions will be approximately 18,000 square feet in area, making it the largest column-free museum gallery in New York City. Additional exhibition space includes a lobby gallery (accessible free of charge), two floors for the permanent collection, and a special exhibitions gallery on the top floor.
