What to wear mardi gras

A friend wrote to ask, “I am going to a black tie Mardi Gras Party at our club.  Can you find me something festive to wear?”  Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday.  It is celebrated around the world, most notably in Brazil, Venice and New Orleans.  In keeping with the Mardi Gras theme, we played with purple, green and gold, the traditional colors of the fête.   Purple represents justice; green, faith; and gold, power.  We started with two sensational purple gowns from Nicole Miller and Ralph Lauren.  Then jazzed them up with festive feathers and flourishes to create a glamourous ensemble, paying homage to this rich and rambunctious celebration of life.
