New York Social Diary Article by Karen Klopp and Hilary Dick on NYSPCC, New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children

GUEST DIARY• BY: KAREN KLOPP AND HILARY DICK

The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children is an organization that we have both supported and admired for a long time.  In 2017, we wrote one of our first articles for New York Social Diary on the Luncheon and through it learned of the dedicated mission and rich history in the life of the city.

The irony of its inception following the creation of the ASPCA, which protects animals, has made a deep impression on what life was like for the unfortunate children of the day. Founded in 1875, NYSPCC is the first child protection agency in the world and the first to create the basic tenets of child protection laws in the United States. You can read about  The Society’s history and accomplishments in this booklet, celebrating the 125th year.

The luncheon, which takes place tomorrow on April 9th, 2024, is a gathering of committed followers and supporters, many of whom are mothers (and fathers) who understand the impact of childhood protection from a play space to cyberspace.

Elizabeth Mayhew, Vice President of the organization, notes the importance of the much anticipated event: “The NYSPCC’s Spring Luncheon is hugely impactful. It heightens awareness about child abuse, builds visibility of the NYSPCC, and raises crucial funds to support our therapy programs. But what is most inspiring about this event is the way it brings people together. It fosters a sense of community around a common goal – to heal and protect children – that is both inspiring and motivating.”

If each month suggests its own scheme, yellow is for April and reminiscent of blooming daffodils and the hope and rebirth. Separates are very popular this season, with suits stealing the show. The new wide-legged silhouette, when paired with a structured jacket, creates an image of luxury and sophistication. To lengthen the look, Dee Ocleppo’s nifty platforms will rise you to the occasion.

Hilary’s selection is right on cue for the season. “This amazing luncheon offers an important reminder about the plight of our children and how we can help their cause. With the weather always being a bit questionable in April, I chose dresses and pieces that can fit whatever the day may bring. Simple classic shapes and pieces will hold up throughout the Spring. And adding a Mary Jane Shoe or White Loafer to the mix, ups the style game.”

The organization continues steadfast in its mission to tackle the most sensitive issues and bring them to the forefront. Mary Pulido, Ph.D, the organization’s Executive Director, explains in an article which highlights the complexity and far reaching frontier of Internet Safety. In 2022, she was selected as one of City and State New York Responsible 100.
